Well, hello all!!
This week I would like to talk about the "fun" class we attended, however, I really want to talk about our Grizzly Cubs presentation. Catherine DiBiagio and I planned to talk about the dental hygiene profession, course requirements, and finally, tobacco products and the relationship with oral cancer. When the students piled into the classroom (a whole 7 people), I was surprised that they were all boys. I thought to myself, oh know, this is going to be a boring class, guys don't want to be hygienists (sorry Sheldon, well, most boys).
We started off the presentation with information on the profession but, I was sure to add in the trivia game we would play at the end with the amazing prizes we have, so listen up!!
I was surprised to see the guys start to become involved, from hunched over why do we have to listen to this, to hands up and very interested in what Catherine and I had to say.
The video portion of the presentation went very well, the oral cancer pictures we showed the boys were very graphic and nasty, but this is what oral cancer visualizes, we could not find any nice pictures of oral cancer!
The trivia game was awesome, we reiterated the important information while putting it into questions, the boys were very involved in this portion as the prize for the right answer was a pack of sugar-free, strawberry-kiwi flavoured gum. Needless to say, every student was able to answer a question and walked away with their prize.
As Catherine and I tidied up, I said to her, "Well, if one of those boys grows up and does not smoke because of the information and the graphics he saw today, I have accomplished my job" (I am sure my job has been accomplished).
For your information, if anyone is interested, the video clip we provided was on youtube. The title of the video is mouth cancer (oral cancer). Now we did not show the whole video, we only played from 40 seconds to 3:22.
Thanks for reading, see you next week!!
